  • Books (not necessarily in order of preference)
    • The Drunkard's Walk: How Randomness Rules Our Lives by Leonard Mlodinow
    • Reinventing Collapse: The Soviet Example and American Prospects (Paperback)by Dmitry Orlov
    • The Subsistence Perspective: Beyond the Globalized Economy (Paperback)
      by Veronika Bennholdt-Thomsen, Maria Mies
    • Dairy Hollow House Soup & Bread Cookbook by Crescent Dragonwagon
    • Plan C: Community Survival Strategies for Peak Oil and Climate Change by Pat Murph
    • Root Cellaring: Natural Cold Storage of Fruits & Vegetables by Mike Bubel, Nancy Bubel

Lately, I have been reading a series of detective mysteries by Ellis Peters, about a 12th century Benedictine monk (Brother Cadfael) who solves mysteries. There are 20 books in the series and I have about half of them.

Here is the list (the ones with stars after them I don't yet have):

  1. A Morbid Taste For Bones
  2. One Corpse too Many
  3. Monk's Hood
  4. Saint Peter's Fair
  5. The Leper of St. Giles***
  6. The Virgin in the Ice
  7. The Sanctuary Sparrow
  8. The Devil's Novice
  9. Dead Man's Ransom***
  10. The Pilgrim of Hate***
  11. An Excellent Mystery
  12. The Raven in the Foregate
  13. The Rose Rent***
  14. The Hermit of Eyton Forest
  15. The Confession of Brother Haluin
  16. The Heretic's Apprentice
  17. The Potter's Field
  18. The Summer of the Danes
  19. The Holy Thief***
  20. Brother Cadfael's Penance***

Many of these are not currently available as single books, but can be had from Amazon in "omnibus" volumes containing three of the stories each. But don;t be held back if I've already got one of the three. Or you may find some of them, as I have, in used book stores.

  • Oven Stuff
    • A set of fireplace tongs
    • A set of welder's gloves
  • Large Folding Knife (know affectionately as Dad's pocket machete)
    • This summer I lost the Gerber Gator knife that Dan and Katelyn gave me a few years ago. It doesn't seem like it is going to turn up, and I am lost without it.
That particular knife, a Gerber Gator with a straight (not serrated blade) is OK and available at Canadian Tire, but Kershaw makes another nice one that cost less and can be had at the Knife Center. With shipping it might come out ot about the same amount.
      Kersaw Lockback at Knife Center

Late breaking news: I finally found my large folding knife. But the handle is getting pretty chewed up, so the Kershaw lockback would still make a good gift.

  • Clocks/watches that don't need electircity or batteries
    • A pocket watch, manual wind, they also make them self winding. Durability is more important than fancy looks
    • A wind up wall clock
  • Inexpensive Lee Valley gadgets:
Lee Valley Tools **Drill/Countersink System (any one of the three below would be good, but I've listed them in order of priority)
I have the one for #8 screws ones, but the #6 one would be good (first [priority), or the #10 one (second priority):
    • for #6 screws: 50J03.36, $18.50
    • for #10 screws: 50J03.40, $18.50
    • Robertson Drive bit set, 19J20.03, $8.90
  • some extra long drill bits in the size range from 1/8" to 1/2". I have seen them at Home Depot.
  • A compass, the type you use when orienteering:
I found my old compass, which is a pretty basic one, but the fluid in it has gone all milky ( you can hardly see the needle) so I do need a new one:
Canadian Tire sells the Suntoo ones, and even the most basic orienteering type of compass, would be fine. I'll put a part number in here soon.
  • Items from the Knife Center
  • A short, bright lens for my Canon Rebel XT. I'll get the part number soon.
  • First Edition SF books:
    • Ursula K Leguin: The Telling, the Disposessed
    • Samuel R. Delany: Babel 17
    • Heinlein: Glory Road, Time Enough for Love

I'm terrible at making lists. Everyone who knows me knows what I like. I will think of somethings to put on the list soon. Here is some of my thoughts:

Dan

For any clothes I'm currently wearing XXL.

  1. A ridiculous crazy amount of things that no one can afford to buy me.

Boardgames

  • Settlers of Catan: City & Knights 5-6 player expansion
  • Settlers of Catan: Traders and Barbarians and the 5-6 players expansions
  • Expansions to Zombies: (all can be found here: Awesome
    • Zombies!!! 2 Zombie Corps(e) Second Edition [That's the military base one, Super zombies. Oh yeah, the super Zombies glow in the dark too. I love shit that glows in the dark. Seriously, if I ever get famous as a guitarist I'll pay DR ridiculous amounts of money to make glow in the dark strings.]
    • Zombies!!! 3.5 Not Dead Yet [This is simply a card expansion. But more cards is awesome]
    • Zombies!!! 4: The End Second Edition [It adds zombie dogs. As well as new winning objectives. It is also stand-alone and as such can be played by itself...but fuck that noise.]
    • Zombies 5: Schools Out Forever SECOND EDITION [This is slightly amusing as school technically is out forever as I'm a 2 time college graduate...but I'm a teacher. It introduces gut tokens. Extra event cards. Good stuff.]
    • Zombies 6: Six Feet Under [It adds sewers. One of the weaker expansions...but that's like saying Joe Satriani is a weaker guitarist than Steve Vai}
    • Zombies 6.66: Fill in the ________!!! [It's nothing more than blank cards. Which Dad could in theory make for free. But you should support good companies. They're rare nowadays.
    • Zombies!!! 8: Jailbreak [The rules for this aren't posted online so I'm not quite sure. But one of the cards is called "Don't Drop the Soap" so I'm going to assume it maintains all the tounge-in-cheek humour of the rest of them. I'm not sure if it is completely compatiable with Send In the Clowns as is says something about starting out in the Mental ward. But the universal rules could be applied to other games. Needless to say it would be silly to buy the 8th expansion before others. Especially since the other expansions do have all the rule posted online so I know what they're all about. Plus GLOW IN THE DARK AND FUCKING CLOWN ZOMBIES!]
  • You can also buy bags of various zombies types. Like Glow in the dark Zombies or Glow in the Dark zombie. Did I mention that everything that glows in the dark is instantly awesome?
  1. Music

A list of bands that kick a ridiculous amount of ass follows. Cds I already own will be marked in brackets(), Cds that I desire more than others are marked in square brackets[] There's a lot of music I listen to that's not on here, so if you don't want to buy any of this shoot me an e-mail and I'll throw some more band names at you.:

  • Black Label Society (Hangover Music Vol. VI) [Mafia, Blessed Hellride], Only Mafia or earlier albums...Zakk hasn't aged well...
  • Dragonforce (Inhuman Rampage, Ultra Beatdown) [The Re-mastered verisons of Valley of the Damned and Sonic Firestorm, not the original ones.]
  • Iron Maiden(Number of the Beast, Live After Death, Piece of Mind,Fear of the Dark, Seventh Son of a Seventh Son, A Matter of Life and Death)[Dance of Death, Brave New World, Iron Maiden, Killers]
  • Children of Bodom
  • Kamelot
  • Megadeth(Countdown to Extinction, Rust in Peace, Peace Sells...but Who's Buying?, United Abominations)
  • ManoWar (The Triumph of Steel) [Gods of War, Fighting the World, Warriors of the World]
  • In Flames (Clayman, Come Clarity)
  • Dream Theater(Train of Thought, Systematic Chaos) [Octavarium]
  • Micheal Angelo Batio [Hands Without Shadows]
  • Bruce Dickinson (Chemical Wedding) [Tyranny of Souls]
  • Steve Vai [Passion and Warfare, Real Illusions: Reflections, Sex and Religion] (Sound Theories)
  • Joe Satriani (Professor Satchafunkilus and the Musterion of Rock)
  • Ygnwie Malmsteen [Rising Force]
  • Opeth (The Roundhouse Tapes)
  • Power Quest (Master of Illusion)
  • Firewind
  • Liquid Tension Experiment
  • Symphony X [The Odyssey, Paradise Lost]
  • Iron Savoir
  • Edguy [Savage Poetry the 2002 version, Rocket Ride, Hellfire Club) Possibly my favourite band ever. Seriously...Somebody buy me Hellfire Club...
  • Heavenly
  • Primal Fear
  • Sabaton
  • Savatage - "Handful Of Rain," "Wake of Magellan," "Dead Winter Dead" and "Poets and Madmen" only please. Their older stuff...is questionably in quality.
  • Tenacious D [Self-titled]
  • Trans-Siberian Orchestra [Beethoven's Last Night] That's it, I don't want any of their christmas albums...Mom on the other hand...
  • Angra [Rebirth, Temple of Shadows]
  • Avantasia (Metal Opera Part 2) This is a side project of Edguy's Singer. As such it kicks unblieveable amounts of ass.
  • Blind Guardian [Imaginatons from the Other Side, Nightfall on Middle Earth]
  • Freedom Call
  • Storm Warrior
  • Cacophony
  • Marty Friedman [Loudspeaker]
  • Heavenly
  • Rage
  • Rebellion

Bands in colours, obviously, I want more than other, but anything on the list is 110% awesome as fuck.

  1. Band Clothing T-shirts or long-sleeved shirts.
    • I have plently of Maiden stuff. Dragonforce too!
  2. Musical Equipment:
    • Tung Sol 12AX7 tubes. Best high gain tubes going down right now. My 5150 uses 5.
    • Morely Power Wah.
    • Damage Control Pedals http://damagecontrolusa.com/products/demonizer/ (the button to creat links disappeared?):
    • 2 ESP Arming Adjuster. A floating Trem Stablizer that works just as well (or better according to some people) as the Ibanez Backstop and 2 of them cost less than 1 Ibanez Backstop. Find them here: http://www.ibanezrules.com/parts.htm
    • Hot Hand Effects(Available from Amazon)
      • Hot Hand Guitar Wah Wah
      • Hot Hand Wireless Adapter
  3. Recording Gear:
    • Rode NT5?. Come in pairs. My mic of choice for overhead drums/cymbal micing. Killer sound.
    • Rode NT1A?. Great for vocals or acoustic instruments. Large Diaphramed condensor
    • AKG C4000B?. Best mic for it's price. Multipattern selectable, bass roll, and a pad. It's good for everything but stuff that has really high SPL. I use it for guitars too.
    • AT4040?. Great for recording pretty much anything. Really silkly high end and a great noise floor. It too has a bass roll of and a pad.
    • Audio Technica ATM25?. I love this mic for kick drums. Really punchy and a huge sound. Hypercardioid pattern so you don't have to worry about bleeding too much either. Can handle crazy SPL level.
    • Shure SM-57. I have one of these. You can never have enough. As well as being almost indestructible it is the mic of choice for heavy guitars and snare drums. It also works well on toms. It's just a really good mic.
    • Sennheiser 421. Combine this with a SM-57 on a guitar cab with the aforementioned C4000B? and you get a great sound. Blend that fucker and you can get everything from reggie to tech death metal.
  4. Books
    • Men Are Better Than Women by Dick Masterson
    • The entire "Ender" Series by Orson Scott Card: (I have Ender's Game, Speaker for the Dead and Xenocide)
