Oven Progress

Sunday, April 25, 2010

Put down the oven floor of fire bricks on a bed of sand, which makes it easier to get them even and level.

Sunday, May 2, 2010

Built the form for the arch of bricks that makes up the oven door, and built the arch, using clay/sand mix for mortar.

Sunday, May 9, 2010

Had a real break-away and built the beehive shaped "sand-castle" that is the form for the dome of the oven and then went ahead and built the dome.

Wedesnday, May 12, 2010

Pulled the form out of the oven doorway and cleaned the sand out from inside. And the dome, for a wonder, didn't fall down. Even though the clay is nowhere near dried out yet, it is strong enough to hold it's shape.

I also wanted to mention that I was reading a preview for Crysis 2. Something was mention in the preview that has made me download the first game. Nevermind that PC Gamer gave it a 98%(It shares that rating with 2 games in all of PC Gamers history).

What was mentioned actually made me say, "Damn, I bet I could get Dad to play this game," to Katelyn.

So here is the big deal.

The guy writing this story is and I quote, "A bonafide sicene fiction writer." The guy writing the story for Crysis 2 is Richard Morgan. Yes, the Richard Morgan. Maybe this will be the first FPS with a good story line since...well ever. Your computer will play the shit of it, haha.

So, we're back from Toronto. Drive up was awesome, Katelyn drove to get practice for when she goes to see Owl City as there is no way in hell that I'm going to that concert. Some douche in a truck almost killed us but Katelyn's superior driving skills saved our lives.

The Hotel was awesome! Really nice staff, super classy and they brought a mini fridge into our room at our request.

The Pickle Barrel Grand was terrible. Absolutely disgusting food. Katelyn got a burger that neither of us liked. Didn't taste, smell or feel like beef. Certified Angus=fail I guess... I got chicken fingers and fries and they weren't even good. Juciy chicken strips are gross. The appetizers, Mozzarella sticks and Sweet Potato Fries, were delicious though.

The Show: The 1st Openers, Pyramid Theorem, were fine. They realised they weren't great singers and most of their songs were mostly instrumental. Great for a 1st opener.

Powerglove was up next. I saw Powerglove play a headliner show on Thursday with the band. And they still kicked fucking ass. Unbelievable great show and the Merch Guy gave me a free keychain when I bought a shirt as we had met the band on Thursday and he recognised me! Awesome stuff. On Thursday I also got one of the inflatable swords they throw to the crowd just before they play their version of Mortal Kombat (they cover video game and cartoon music) and got Half the Band to sign it!

Mutiny Within put on a great show. Awesome stage presence and the Singer was all over the place coming out to the crowd and even crowd surfing at one point. After he surfed he gave me the point and nod as at one point I was the only person holding him up as apparently the rest of the audience was fucking retard and didn't understand what to do when the singer yelled, "Catch Me Toronto." Unfortunately the sound guy did not give them a good mix. Neither the lead guitar nor Vocals came through clearly. Upon Youtube their music is okay... but they put on one hell of a show.

Sonata Arctica (the Headliner) was interesting. They frontloaded the set with a bunch of the slow/rock songs from the newer albums. Unfortunately this is what most of the aformentioned retarded crowd loved. Also unfortunately these stupid kids don't have any mosh etiquette. This combined with Katelyn's recent Workplace injury had us move back from our coveted against the barrier position (which we had been at since just before Powerglove started their set). They picked up the set with some of the faster songs and just less than the last half of the set was full of Katelyn and my favourite songs by them. However, 2 dudes pretty much ruined it for everybody around them. If you can't handle your liquour don't drink in public. And learn how to fucking mosh people...Fuck.

So the show was good, but it wasn't great. It seemed like Sonata was out of energy and just went out and played the show because it was their job.

Back at the hotel was showered the sweat and smoke off. I cannot even begin to describe how comfortable the King size bed was. Even more the Pillows. Sweet Jesus, My neck didn't even hurt. After 2 straight nights of headbanging my neck didn't hurt. Plus we orded pizza to the room at 1:15 and TV was free! The only down size was king size beds are too large! We both work up before the alarm we set (they actually had the same alarm clock in the room that we have in our bedroom) packed up and checked out!.

I drove home and it was a nice, uneventful drive. Only had to apply excess brakes at one point as somebody thought he had enough time to make a left turn against the traffic going 100KM/H (or I was going 100KM/H most people where going 130+). Just under 2 hours which is pretty good.

So I'm finally typing this from my new Computer

It's Finally up and working. The original Ram didn't work for some reason, so I've got to send it back. Had to order from Newegg.com to get 100% guaranteed compatiable ram. But it was considerably cheaper so I got 8 gigs.

Final Specs:

  • MOBO: Gigabyte P55M?-UD4? Intel P55 Socket
  • CPU: Intel Core i5-750 2.66Ghz 8M LGA1156? CPU
  • Power Supply: Corsair VX550W? 550W
  • Case: Apex Vortex3620 Gaming Mid-Tower Case
  • Video Card: Visiontek Radeon HD 5850 1GB DDR5? PCIe? (2 tiny steps back from top of the line)
  • HDD: WD Caviar Black 1TB SATA HD 7200/32MB/SATA-3G
  • ODD: Samsung 22X DVDRW SATA OEM
  • RAM: G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3? SDRAM DDR3? 1333 (PC3? 10666) Dual Channel (2 sets)
  • Mouse/Keyboard: Microsoft Business Hrdwre Pk-Keyboard-Mouse (Ghetto and cheap but $20 less than just a high quality Logitech gaming mouse, let alone what some of those fancy keyboards go for. And it's working perfectly so far)
  • OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Professional 64Bit

Working like a dream so far. Windows 7 takes a little bit to get used to and I think some of the changes are stupid (mainly in the start menu) but set to "Windows classic" theme it's not that much different in looks. Runs like a beast and boots up in under 20 seconds, which makes me happy. The Draconian firewall things is useful to. Might be annoying to some (Yes, I do want to install that program I just told you to install) but if it actually is circumvented by virus/spyware it will be useful. Plus Windows 7 seems to block bad drivers, that will fuck up the computer, which is awesome. Especially when the bad drivers is copy protection for Games I downloaded. That amused me greatly.

As for how come 8 gigs works Dad: It's only Core I7 900 or higher than does the 3 gig per channel thing. Core I5 (which I went with as you'll notice) or Core I7 800 series is 2 gig per channel.

On a Completely different note:

The band just find a singer. She (yeah, believe it or not) came out to audition on Thursday and blew me away. Sang the covers damn near perfectly on her first listen through and by the end of the night was singing along fine without the music playing in the background. That's fucking impressive.

There hadn't been a post in a while so I thought I would make one: I just got a 1990s Ibanez S540 LTD in silver/gray. The Silver/gray ones were pretty rare and the 1987-1992 are considered the "Golden age" for Saber (Which is what the S stands for) guitar by Ibanez. Apparently the new ones are fat hogs compared to the old ones. The equivalent guitar would cost me over $2000 (that's with my 20% discount. And %20 may now sound like much but %20 of several thousand is a lot) wheras I snagged this for $500+shipping. This was the guys #1 S. I won't go into the whole forum thing and explain how he isn't bullshitting me into buying a crappy guitar but S-man(The guy's name on Jemsite [which is a site dedicated to Epic Ibanez guitar and Steve Vai's Jem {hence the name} in particular) has posted numerous pictures of his "#1 S" in various different threads up to 5 years before he tried to sell this guy. He required me to say my experience with guitar as he didn't want this mojo filled guitar going to a shitty home. Plus the back tremolo cover is signed by Joe Satriani and cover in 3M clear automotive film so I don't have to worry about it coming off with play. That's right. Over 75% off and signed by Joe Satriani. That's the kind of deal you don't pass up. Everybody else needs to update this shit more. Family wiki people lets make it a Family wiki in more than just name.

Warmachine has just released "Field test" rules for it's new edition (Mark 2). I'm reading over them and I was wondering if you would like to have some gaming over the 5ish days we will be home? I'm also planning on bringin Zombies and throwing weapons but I don't think we have enough room to throw them at the parents.

My Dream Guitar page

I'm trying this new page thing out, Dream Guitars?. I would like to have in as a subsection to Katelyn and mine's page...but again, out of my league.

Those subsections are called groups. Once you create a page in a group, it's kinda tricky to move it to anohter group. So it's best to create them where you want them. Two ways to do so:
1)Create the initial link to the new page on a page in the group you want it to be in. So, if you had created the link to Dream Guitars on your homepage (DanKatelyn.HomePage), you'd have been fine.
2)Include the name of the group in the link, like: [[DanKatelyn.DreamGuitars]], and the new page will end up in the right group.
Once you get this page created, you can go to Main.DreamGuitars? and cut and paste it's contents.
To delete a page, edit it, delete all it's contents and replace them with the word "delete" (without quotation makes). Hit save and the page will be deleted. Any links to it on other pages go back to being links to as yet uncleated pages (the ones with the little question mark).

Well, you did a pretty good job of getting it back, so not to worry -- Dad

Mess up!

So...Dan and I were updated the gift registry page last night, and somehow, I do believe I managed to delete all of the text. I went back into the history and copy and pasted all of it back (it hadn't updated Dan's and my changes), however it didn't space right. Sorry about this!

CDs...

So, my CD only has one track(not song, but track) left to be recorded. Since, I've already sold some copies, it'd be nice if I had some CDs (and jewel cases) to put them in. Now, the question is, what the the most reliable yet affordable CDs with cases that I can get? I also need to update the insert, and get a tracklisting for the back, but then I need to print this stuff out. So yeah...just a heads up.

Completely unrelated note: How do I create a new page...?

Instructions for creating a new page are to be found at PmWiki.CreatingNewPages

Jan 20, 2006 -- we won the lottery!

After around twenty years of bringing our own bags (re-usable cloth ones) to grocery shopping at Zehr's in Kincardine, we finally won a $25 gift certificate in the draw they have every month for people who bring their own bags. Amazing!

However, if you kill all the stupid people in society, it will become a very lonesome place. So we won't be bringing your hockey stick. We'll have to think about the "lord and master" part...

I NEED A NINJA

I forgot to photocopy that stuff, and the page protectors I need for that project. Now, this is a rather big deal, that is 5% off the top of the project right there. So, what I'm proposing is as follows:

  1. You guys make photocopies of my various awards/scholarships.
  2. You gather these photocopies and said page protectors as well as, a binder in good condition.
  3. You take said gathered things and drive them down to me on Thursday.
  4. We make the best out of a bad situation and make a day out of this driving down.
  5. I becoming a super ninja and kill all the stupid people in society and make the world a good place to live, with my hockey stick
  6. You then elect me lord and master of the universe.

Power Outage, November 21, 2005

The power was off here in Kincardine for a couple of hours (approximately 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.), so if you had trouble accessing this wiki, that's why!

New Version of pmwiki now in use!

This will interest some of you in that the way a space at the start of a line is handled is now somewhat different. To quote the documentation:
"Whitespace indentation rules now exist and are enabled by default. Any line that begins with whitespace and aligns with a previous list item is considered to be "within" that list item. Text folds and wraps as normal, and the (:linebreaks:) directive is honored. To turn off whitespace indentation, use DisableMarkup('^ws');."
The (:linebreaks:) thing makes all the line breaks you put in in the edit mode show up on the page.

Danny Wins Scholarship

Commencement was last night (November 5, 2005) at KDSS, and Danny won the Kincardine Summer Music Festival Scholarship. This came as a complete surprise to us, but it's $150, and that's great. He was an Ontario scholar as well, but that was no surprise (and it's worth $50, these days).

News from Ella!

Ella was our first foster dog, who was adopted late in September. She came from Adopt-a-pet/Pet Rescue, a privately operated, non-profit animal shelter based in Lucknow, Ontario
Here is the text of an email from her: (Oct. 25/05)
Kathi/Barb
Just a little note to tell I have really settled in with Judy and Bill. The cats were a bit of a pain at the start but I have them now in line. I have taught my masters new tricks such as roll over, shake a paw, sit at each corner, and to heel. The man master is a bit hesitant to sit at each corner but I will bring him around soon. Give a bark to all my buddies at the shelter and tell there are good master out there to rescue them. Enclose is a picture which I hope you will pass on to my foster parents as I did enjoy their company as well.
Woof for now
Ella

And here is the photo that came with the email:

A new foster dog!

We have a new foster dog. His name is Rumor and he is a husky cross (with what, no one is sure).
Photos coming soon! --Irv Mills October 04, 2005, at 11:07 PM EST

It doesn't show too well here, but Rumor's eyes are a sort of icy blue.
He weights around 40 lbs. and is somewhere between 1 and 2 years old.
Pretty well full grown, but not completely filled out yet.

Ella Has Been Adopted -- September 25, 2005

Ella was adopted today by a nice couple from Newmarket. We are sorry to see her go, but it's great that she has found a permanent home.

Everybody's home page now has something on it!

So I have moved the links to them over to the sidebar on the left.
Irv, Sept. 20, 2005

September 16, 2005

Well, we've had Ella for a week and a half now and she is a real sweetie. She comes when called, sits when told too and is getting better at fetch every day. And she is really quiet -- only barks when startled, never at other dogs or people. For more photos of Ella (and our cat Loki), check out DanKatelyn.Pets1.

September 6, 2005

Just this evening we picked up Ella, the dog we are fostering for Adopt-a-pet in Lucknow.
Here is a picture of her:

Ella appears to be a mix of black Lab and Airedale terrier, what I would call a "wire-haired whatchamacallit". Her personality is very much that of the lab. --Dad

Those subsections are called groups. Once you create a page in a group, it's kinda tricky to move it to anohter group. So it's best to create them where you want them. Two ways to do so:

Now, the question is, what the the most reliable yet affordable CDs? with cases that I can get? I also need to update the insert, and get a tracklisting for the back, but then I need to print this stuff out. So yeah...just a heads up.

This will interest some of you in that the way a space at the start of a line is handled is now somewhat different.
Whitespace indentation rules now exist and are enabled by default. Any line that begins with whitespace and aligns with a previous list item is considered to be "within" that list item. Text folds and wraps as normal, and the (:linebreaks:) directive is honored. To turn off whitespace indentation, use DisableMarkup('^ws');.
The (:linebreaks:) thing makes all the line breaks you put in in the edit mode show up on the page.

Danny Win Scholarship

Commencement was last night (November 5, 2005) at KDSS, and Danny won the Kincardine Summer Music Festival Scholarship. This came as a complete surprise to us, but it's $150, adnthat's great. He was an Ontario scholar as well, but that was no surprise (and it's worth $50, these days).

"Kathi/Barb Just a little note to tell I have really settled in with Judy and Bill. The cat were a bit of a pain at the start but I have them now in line.

Ella"
